Plymouth - Smugglers in the West Country

We depart our home area and head for Plymouth stopping on the way for a meal stop and refreshments. We have two full day excursions on this holiday including the port of Charlestown which was featured in TVs popular drama series ‘Poldark’. The harbour was built in the 18^th century to support the China clay and copper mining industries. Here we visit the Shipwreck, Rescue and Heritage Centre, telling the story of the port, ships, and wrecks along this part of the coast. We move on to Mevagissey with a maze of narrow streets around the harbour where you can grab a bite to eat if you please. This afternoon we make our way to Looe. The popular seaside town of Looe can keep visitors entertained all year round and retains its character as a bustling working fishing port. We drive to rugged Bodmin Moor and stop at Jamaica Inn. With its Daphne Du Maurier associations and a museum filled with smuggling artefacts collected over many years. From here we travel to the North Cornwall coast and Tintagel with its dramatic castle ruins, and the pretty harbour at Port Isaac, setting for TV’s Doc Martin. We have an amazing day at leisure for you to explore the historic city of Plymouth. Take a stroll around the famous Hoe, visit the Barbican Steps, and browse around the city centre shops.
